Michael Arvaaluk Kusugak is a children's book author originally from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. Some of his books include The Littlest Sled Dog, My Arctic 123, Hide and Sneak, Northern Lights and Soccer Trails, Baseball Bats for Christmas and perhaps his most famous classic A Promise is a Promise.
Michael shared his wonderful stories, which are the inspirations for his books, of growing up in the arctic, learning the way of the land from his family, being taken away to residential school and his youth as a bush pilot. His stories captivated children from every elementary school in the district including the grade 6 classes at PRMS.
Along with Michael's stories, Gerry Kusugak conducted hands-on workshops for SD52 students to see and feel items that make life easier in the Arctic. Students were able to try on traditional clothing, learn about certain tools as well as watch videos of what life is like around Rankin Inlet.
A partnership between North Coast Literacy Now, Prince Rupert Early Years and School District 52 Aboriginal Education provided the means for Michael and Gerry's visit to Prince Rupert.
