Grade 3 Students at Lax Kxeen investigate the math of Cedar weaving

Grade 3 Students at Lax Kxeen investigate the math of Cedar weaving.

Students learned how to recreate various increasing and shrinking patterns in cedar weaving and then analyzed the numeric value of each added layer to predict how the pattern was changing over time. The end of the unit was celebrated with a visit from Aboriginal Role Model Fanny Nelson, who came to the class to teach them how to weave one of the patterns they had been studying with cedar. Each student made a colorful paper fish as well, using the same techniques used to weave cedar.
