This Friday, September 29th, students, staff and parents in Prince Rupert will wear Orange T-shirts to commemorate all those children who attended Indian Residential Schools. These T-shirts feature a design by Charles Hays Secondary Student Tanaiya Pearsen that promotes acknowledgement, understanding and reconciliation for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Canada.
T-Shirts will be sold for $10 at PRMS, CHSS and Wap Sigatgyet starting next week.
Orange T-shirt Day comes with the slogan "Every Child Matters" to help us all understand the importance of acknowledging the truth about Indian Residential Schools as well as to honour and remember all those children who were taken from their communities and families and forced to attend these schools. The Canadian government's malicious mandate to "Take the Indian out of the Child" led to mental, physical and sexual abuse, a loss of culture and language and generational trauma still felt in communities today. Wearing an Orange T-shirt helps spread awareness of the truth that will help on the path to reconciliation.
