CHSS Students attend the ONC Ocean Science symposium.

This past weekend, students Shayla Brown and Nameste Bolton and teachers Tannis Calder and Kathy Offutt spent the weekend learning all about Ocean science with other teachers and students from across BC at the ONC Ocean Science Symposium at the University of Victoria. At the symposium they had the opportunity to explore the ocean through the lens of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, geography, engineering, and place-based Indigenous knowledge and gain an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the ocean and its importance to local peoples. Below are a few highlights of the trip:

Examining a very large Sea Cucumber in the Marine Science classroom at Pearson College

The skeleton of a Grey Whale that washed on on the shore near Pearson College.

A presentation on the importance of Math in Marine Biology

Sea Weed Art and ID: Searching through a bin full of different sea weeds collected from near the University.

Nameste found the name of her seaweed.

After ID-ing the seaweeds they are pressed between layers of wood and newspaper.
After a couple of weeks of drying, the finished artwork will be mailed back to us!

Learning about the effects of Noise pollution on sea mammals due to marine traffic and how scientists are working to find ways to minimize the noise pollution.

Marine Science Trivia with Ocean Knowlege cards highlighting 36 species of sea life found along Vancouver island's west coast, developed by Ocean Networks Canada and the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.
